Mere Green is in the Sutton Four Oaks ward in north-east Birmingham, seven miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Four Oaks, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield Town and Whitehouse Common. The word "mere" means pool in old English and green translates as pasture. Hence, the name Mere Green indicated the presence of grazing land by a pond. Mere Green was originally an estate village that evolved alongside Four Oaks Hall. The area was urbanised in the 1950's when the first major housing developments were completed. Mere Green is characterised by detached houses and semi-detached pairs. There are also higher density flats and terraces, trading estates and a commercial centre at the junction of Mere Green Road and Lichfield Road.
