The Lozells and East Handsworth ward is in north-west
Birmingham, roughly one mile from the city centre. It is flanked
by the Aston ward, the
Handsworth Wood ward,
the Perry Barr ward
and the Soho ward. The
Lozells and East Handsworth
ward contains the area of
Lozells and parts of
Handsworth,
Hockley,
Soho and
Perry Barr. |

There are roughly 26,000 people resident in the Lozells &
East Handsworth ward.
The population density is 75 persons per hectare compared to
an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The average age is
31 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
Approximately 57% of the population is of Asian origin with
25% from Pakistan, 18% from India and 12% from Bangladesh.
The white British population accounts for roughly 10% of
residents.
Around 19.5% of the population is black, including 16% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
6% of residents are white non-British (including Irish), 4%
are of mixed race, and 3.5% are of Chinese origin or belong to
some other ethnic group.

now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The ward was first developed in the late 19th century and so the
housing stock mainly consists of pre-1919 terraces, many of
which require refurbishment. A large number are privately let by
property entrepreneurs.
The older back-to-back terraces were demolished in the 1960's
and replaced by high-density council estates.
The ward also contains a number of early Victorian mansions,
particularly in the area around Handsworth Park. Most have been
divided into flats or bedsits.
The rate of owner occupation in Lozells & East Handsworth is
around 45%. Roughly 10% of homes are rented from private
landlords and 43% from the local authority or housing
associations. |
