The Kingstanding council ward is in north Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the Erdington ward, the Oscott ward, the Stockland Green ward and the Sutton Vesey ward.

The Kingstanding ward contains the areas of Kingstanding and Wyrley Birch.

There are approximately 26,000 people resident in the Kingstanding ward.

The population density is 56 persons per hectare compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The average age is 41 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.

The white British population accounts for around 83.5% of all residents.

Approximately 3% of residents are of Asian origin with roughly 1.5% from India, 1% from Pakistan and 0.5% from Bangladesh.

4% of the population is black, including 3.5% of Afro-Caribbean descent.

6.5% of residents are white non-British (including Irish), 2.5% are of mixed race, and 0.5% are of Chinese origin or belong to some other ethnic group.

These figures may differ from official census data which is now several years out of date and which was collated in respect of different ward boundaries.

Kingstanding was developed in the interwar years when council estates were built at Warren Farm in the northern part of the ward and Perry Common in the southern part.

A large proportion of these houses are three bedroom family homes with front and rear gardens arranged in crescents or short terraces. Some are decayed and require refurbishment.

The Wyrley Birch estate, which was built in the 1960's, contains blocks of flats and maisonettes, many of which have since been replaced by lower density housing.

Private house building has mainly been concentrated in the western (Oscott) side of the ward which was developed in the 1970's.

The rate of owner occupation in Kingstanding is 50%. Roughly 4% of homes are rented from private landlords and 42% from the local authority or housing associations.

 
Economy: Kingstanding Ward
 
The workless rate (economically inactive of working age) in the Kingstanding ward is 30% compared to an average of around 20.5% for Birmingham as a whole.

72% of the ward is amongst the 5% most deprived areas in England; 82% is amongst the 10% most deprived areas in England and 94% is amongst the 20% most deprived areas in England (how is deprivation measured?)

The major employers are Christ the King RC Primary School (roughly 190 jobs), Service Team (grounds management = 190), Wilson Stuart School (special needs = 140), Leavesley Cleaning Services (100), Kingstanding Leisure Centre (100), College High School (90).

Hallot Close Public Open Space, Hurstwood/Maxted Public Open Space, Rodis Close Public Open Space, Marshmont Way Public Open Space, Warren Farm Public Open Space, Wheeldon Recreation Ground and Wyrley Birch Allotments.

Politics: Kingstanding Ward
 
Kingstanding is one of forty wards in Birmingham that each elect three councillors. It is currently represented by Des Hughes (Labour), Peter Kane (Labour) and Catharine Grundy (Labour).

Kingstanding forms part of the Erdington Council Constituency.

The National Front held a march attended by around 40 people in Kingstanding on Friday 23rd April 2010 (St Georges Day) in commemoration of a local NF activitist who was shot dead in 2002 and whose murderer was never caught (News Report 25/04/10).

Des Hughes (Labour) has represented the Kingstanding ward since May 2010; his current mandate will expire in 2014.
