Kingstanding is an area in the Kingstanding ward in north Birmingham, four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Queslett, Witton, Banners Gate, New Oscott, Old Oscott, Great Barr, Perry Barr, Stockland Green and Wyrley Birch. Kingstanding is named after King Charles I who raised his standard on a (now-levelled) prehistoric mound off the Kingstanding Road at the start of the English Civil War in 1642. Kingstanding remained rural until 1928 when the council began to develop the area for municipal housing, a process that continued until the early fifties when the Warren Farm and Kettlehouse estates were completed. There is a commercial centre at the Kingstanding Circle where Kings Road and Kingstanding Road intersect.
