Kings Heath is in the Brandwood ward and the Moseley & Kings Heath ward in south Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Billesley, Brandwood, Lifford, Stirchley, Warstock, Moor Green and Wake Green. Kings Heath was originally an open heath owned by the royal manor of Kings Norton. It was enclosed in the late 18th century as ribbon development occurred along the Alcester Road. Wealthy industrialists then built country homes in Kings Heath, some of which still stand whilst others were replaced by semi-detached and terraced housing as a busy commercial centre evolved on Kings Heath High Street. The rate of urbanisation accelerated after Kings Heath was annexed by Birmingham in 1911. Private and municipal house-building then extended the area southwards as Haunch Farm was developed in the 1930's and Woodthorpe Farm & Southern Farm in the 1950's. Kings Heath High Street Kings Heath was once the principal retail centre in south Birmingham but in recent years it has lost significant footfall to Shirley, Solihull and the Maypole Retail Park. The High Street, which forms part of the A435, is a major arterial route between central Birmingham, Worcestershire and Junction 3 of the M42. Consequently it is a congestion bottleneck, a problem aggravated by the large number of slow-moving buses that constantly pass through the town. Moreover, parking is piecemeal; the council having failed to invest in a large multi-storey. Although many major retailers such as Argos, Boots, Dorothy Perkins and Evans are still represented on the High Street, there are now an increasing number of charity shops, moneylenders, takeaways, bookmakers and empty premises. The High Street could be improved by re-opening the Camp Hill Railway to passenger services so trains could operate from New Street Station to Kings Heath. Greater public investment could transform the town into an urban village with street furniture, fountains, sculptures, shrubs, greenery, cafes, bistros, pubs, restaurants and speciality retailers. Ideally, some method of bypassing the High Street should be found so that the shopping area can be remodelled as a pedestrian precinct. In March 2011, Lib Dem councillor Emily Cox was concerned that Kings Heath High Street was becoming the "home of takeaways and called for a development plan in order to preserve its identity as a shopping centre (News Archive 21/03/11). Public Square in Kings Heath Kingsway Cinema The Kingsway (1929) on Kings Heath High Street is a former cinema with a splendid art deco interior. The Conservation and Heritage Panel of Birmingham City Council has advised that it should be protected by a preservation order (News Archive 12/03/10) In September 2010, a private developer applied for permission to convert the Kingsway, latterly a Gala Bingo Hall, into a 700-seat restaurant, banqueting and conference centre (News Archive 30/09/10). The Planning Committee rejected this application in December 2010 because of insufficient parking and the probability of increased traffic congestion (News Archive 15/12/10) This building was severely damaged by fire in September 2011 (News Headlines 19/09/11) Kings Heath Library Kings Heath Library at 4 High Street is a listed Edwardian building. It was temporarily closed in January 2011 because its skylights were at risk of collapsing; however, the council could not afford £300,000 for exact replicas and so installed permanent scaffolding hidden by a false ceiling at a cost of only £55,000 (News Archive 01/01/11)
