Hodge Hill is an area in the Hodge Hill council ward in north-east Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Alum Rock, Bromford, Stechford, Tyburn, Castle Bromwich, Shard End, Ward End and Washwood Heath. Hodge Hill, originally Hodge's Hill, is named after a mediaeval landowner. The hill in question formed part of a common that contained burial mounds, prehistoric earthworks and standing stones. The area was developed after the First World War when private estates of mainly semi-detached suburban homes were laid out. Part of the common was preserved, but little of archaeological interest remains.
