Overview Hockley

Hockley is an area in the Aston ward and the Soho ward in north-west Birmingham, one mile from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Lozells, Newtown, Soho, Winson Green, the Gun Quarter and the Jewellery Quarter.

Hockley is a corruption of Hocca's leah which means a woodland clearing owned by Hocca. The area remained agricultural land until the industrialisation of the Jewellery Quarter in the mid-19th century. Factories and back-to-back terraces were then built in Hockley as Birmingham expanded westwards.

These Victorian slums were replaced by municipal housing in the 1960's. Many factories have since closed and some industrial sites have been regenerated as offices, apartments or new housing estates.

Hockley is now characterised by low-rise flats, terraces and some semi-detached pairs. There are also several residential towers including a row of five on the Saint Georges Estate.
