Overview Hay Mills

Hay Mills is in the South Yardley ward in south-east Birmingham, roughly three miles from the city centre. It is surrounded by Tyseley, Yardley and Small Heath.

The area is named after Hay Mill which stood on Mill Road and was powered by the River Cole. Hay is a corruption of gehaeg which means enclosed land.

The area remained rural until 1830 when the industrialist James Horsfall acquired Hay Mill and rebuilt it as a wire drawing factory. The factory expanded after Horsfall entered into partnership with Joseph Webster of Penns Mill and patented a heat process for the production of high-tensile steel wire.

Horsfall built rows of small terraced houses on both sides of the Coventry Road in the mid-19th century. This community had developed into an industrial suburb by 1914. New areas of mainly terraced houses, arranged in short closes, were added between 1930 and 1970 as urbanisation spread along the east bank of the River Cole.

Churches in Hay Mills

St Cyprians

Saint Cyprian's was built by James Horsfall in 1873; it stands at the entrance to his steel-wire factory in Hay Mills.

Designed by Chamberlain and Martin, the church was built in the Gothic Style in red-brick with black-brick and stone dressings; it comprises a nave and clerestory flanked by low narrow aisles and a south-west tower topped by a slate broach-spire.

There is a tympanum above the west entrance that contains an image of the Transfiguration; the interior features a memorial to Horsfall's daughter, Mary Sims; other treasures include some splendid stained glass and a stone font presided over by a marble angel.
