Harborne is an area in the Harborne ward and the Quinton ward in south-west Birmingham, roughly two miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Bearwood, Metchley, Quinton, Weoley, Woodgate, Chad Valley, Selly Oak and Rotton Park. The ancient parish boundaries were the Chad Brook and the Bourn Brook and the name Harborne is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "har" meaning boundary marker and "bourne" meaning stream. Harborne remained a rural village centred on Saint Peters Church until the mid-19th century when a bustling High Street developed on the main route into Birmingham, roughly 300 metres to the north. The pace of change accelerated after the now-defunct Harborne Railway Station opened in 1876. The area was annexed by Birmingham in 1891. However, despite large-scale urbanisation, most housing developments, particularly the Moor Pool Estate, were low-density with a high incidence of open space whilst industrial development was mainly limited to the Chad Valley Toy factory.
