The Handsworth Wood council ward is in north-west Birmingham,
roughly two miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Perry Barr ward, the
Soho ward, the
Springfield ward,
the
Lozells & East Handsworth ward and the Metropolitan Borough
of Sandwell The Handsworth Wood council ward contains the area
of Handsworth
Wood and parts of
Handsworth and Hamstead. |

There are approximately 27,000 people resident in the
Handsworth Wood ward.
The population density is roughly 37 persons per hectare
compared to an average of 36.5 for the city as a whole. The
average age is 38 compared to 36 for Birmingham as a whole.
Around 47% of the population is of Asian origin with roughly
38% from India, 5% from Pakistan and 1.5% from Bangladesh.
The white British population accounts for around 26% of all
residents.
16% of the population is black, including 14% of Afro-Caribbean
descent.
6.5% are white non-British (including Irish), 3.5% are of
mixed race, and 1% are of Chinese origin or belong to some other
ethnic group.

now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The ward includes parts of inner city Handsworth where the
housing stock mainly consists of pre-1919 terraces, many of
which have been refurbished with the assistance of council
grants.
There are also multi-occupied Victorian mansions,
particularly in the vicinity of Handsworth Park.
Beyond the inner city, the suburban avenues branching off
Handsworth Wood Road and Hamstead Hill Road are lined with
interwar detached and semi-detached houses, often with spacious
front and rear gardens.
There is also a landscaped student village on Friary
Road.
Parts of Handsworth Wood remain undeveloped.
The rate of owner occupation is around 67%. Roughly 12% of
homes are rented from private landlords and around 17% from the
local authority or housing associations. |
