Overview Handsworth Wood

Handsworth Wood is an area in the Handsworth Wood ward in north-west Birmingham, roughly two miles from the city centre. It is named after a wood that once stood on the north side of Handsworth Manor. The surrounding areas are Handsworth, Hamstead, Lozells, Perry Barr and Sandwell.

Most of Handsworth Wood had been cleared by 1800, but the area remained largely rural, attracting wealthy industrialists who built country houses set in extensive grounds. Several middle-class estates were laid out between 1920 and 1950, but then development ceased, leaving abundant green space.
