Overview Hall Green

Hall Green is an area of south-east Birmingham in the Hall Green ward, roughly five miles from the city centre. The name is a corruption of Hawe Green which means enclosed pasture in old English. The surrounding areas are Billesley, Shirley, Sparkhill, Springfield, Fox Hollies, Wake Green and Yardley Wood.

Apart from some ribbon development along the Stratford Road, Hall Green remained largely undeveloped until the 1920's when several tree-lined avenues of private semi-detached homes were laid out. Three council estates followed at Bushmore Farm, Gospel Oak and Fox Hollies.

Sarehole Mill (circa 1756) is a working water mill located in the Shire Country Park off Cole Bank Road. It is now a museum owned by Birmingham City Council.

The mill is powered by water extracted from the River Cole and stored in a pond. The water is released through a sluice gate into buckets placed on an overshot wheel. The weight of the water causes the wheel to turn; 120 rotations per minute can be achieved through a complex system of gears.

The museum contains displays dedicated to J R R Tolkien, the author of the Lord of the Rings, who lived nearby and was fascinated by the mill. It is believed that the fictional Hobbiton Village is based on a fantasy version of the mill.

Sarehole Mill is open to the general public from March to September. Admission is free. The machinery is demonstrated on special days. There is an on-site car park, shop and cafe.

The Middle Earth Festival is held annually at Sarehole Mill in May (Festivals in Brum).

The Maggies Public House (circa 1935) is a rectilinear building inspired by the Bauhaus School. It features a roof terrace and its own bowling green and pavilion.

The surrounding houses are interwar suburban semi-detached pairs with unusual features such as architectural features such as rustic-faced facades and semi-circular arched porches.
