Greet is an area of south-east Birmingham in the South Yardley ward, roughly three miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Small Heath, Sparkhill and Tyseley. Greet is derived from the old English word "greot" which means gravel, the local geology consisting of gravel on red clay. Greet was a rural community on the Warwick Road that became rapidly industrialised in the 1870's as claypits and brickworks opened to supply the building materials required for the rapid urbanisation of Sparkhill and Small Heath. Several rows of small terraced houses were built in the late 19th century followed by an interwar estate of semi-detached pairs off Hangleton Drive. However, Greet did not become a cohesive urban community since large areas were either developed as the Tyseley Industrial Estate or in-filled with industrial waste after the claypits closed.
