Four Oaks is an area of north-east Birmingham in the Sutton Four Oaks ward, roughly seven miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Mere Green, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield Town and Whitehouse Common. Four Oaks was named after a cluster of four ancient oak trees of which three survive in a garden on Hartopp Road. These trees used to stand in the grounds of Four Oaks Hall which was demolished in 1892. The grounds were redeveloped, first as a racecourse, and then as an estate of detached Edwardian mansions. Four Oaks expanded in the 1950's when the Hill Hook estate on the north side of Sutton Park was developed as terraced, semi-detached and detached housing.
