The Erdington council ward is in north-east Birmingham, roughly
five miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Kingstanding ward,
the Stockland Green
ward, the Sutton
New Hall ward, the
Sutton Vesey ward and the
Tyburn ward. The Erdington council ward includes the areas
of Short Heath and
Erdington Town. |

There are approximately 24,000 people resident in the
Erdington ward.
The population density is roughly 53 persons per hectare
compared to an average of 36.5 for Birmingham as a whole. The
average age is 41 compared to 36 for the city as a whole.
The white British population accounts for roughly 79% of all
residents.
Around 4% of the population is of Asian origin with roughly
2% from India and 1.5% from Pakistan.
Around 4% of the population is black, including 3.5% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
10% of residents are white non-British (including Irish), 2.5% are mixed
race, and 0.5% are of Chinese origin or belong to some other
ethnic group.
These figures may differ from official census data which is
now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The area around Erdington High Street contains several avenues
lined by detached Victorian villas, many of which have been
divided into flats.
There are also rows of small Edwardian terraced houses,
particularly near the railway station and in Short Heath which
also contains a large number of interwar semi-detached homes and
a post-war council estate with five tower blocks on Jarvis Road.
The Lyndhurst Estate, which was built on Sutton Road in the
1950's, contains low-rise maisonettes and another five
tower blocks.
The rate of owner occupation in Erdington is around 64%.
Roughly 8% of homes are rented from private landlords and 26%
from the local authority or housing associations. |
