Erdington Town is located in the Erdington ward in north-east Birmingham, roughly five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Boldmere, Tyburn, Walmley, Wylde Green, Pype Hayes, Short Heath, Stockland Green and Gravelly Hill. The name Erdington is a corruption of Eardwulf's Tun which is Anglo-Saxon for the farmstead owned by Eardwulf. The area was a sub-manor of Aston owned by the Holte family and did not become a significant settlement until the 1860's when Erdington Railway Station opened on the Sutton Coldfield line and several rows of townhouses were built. Erdington gradually expanded as an industrial corridor evolved eastwards along the line of the Tyburn Road, the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. In doing so it created a belt of residential suburbs and transformed the original village of Erdington into a major commercial centre. St Barnabas Saint Barnabas is the C of E parish church of Erdington; it was built in stone in the Decorated Style with a crenellated parapet to a design by Thomas Rickman in 1822. The original grade-two-listed building comprised a four-bay nave without aisles, a west gallery on a cusped iron screen and a west tower with angle buttresses; JA Chatwin added the chancel and transepts in 1883. The interior contained 8 stained-glass windows by Rickman; however, all but one were destroyed in an arson attack which gutted the building in 2007; the only other parts of the church that survived the blaze were the belltower, lecturn, clock and ringing tower. The church is to be rebuilt with the addition of a controversial modern foyer that will include a glazed facade and steel roof. The foyer will provide an additional entrance from Erdington High Street but critics believe that the modern design is unsuitable as an extension to an historic listed building. Officials will remove 23 monuments (including several 19th century gravestones) from the churchyard in order to prepare the site for the anticipated rebuild (News Archive 26/08/10). Work began on the rebuild in February 2011 (News Archive 06/02/11). Links: Landmark Churches Erdington Abbey Erdington Abbey (1850) stands on Sutton Road; the original core building is the RC church of Saints Thomas and Edmund designed by Augustus Pugin in his Gothic Style. The church, which was built in red sandstone with ashlar dressings, contains a chancel, nave, transepts and a 36-metre west tower with a broached spire. The interior is faced with limestone. The church and four acres of adjoining land were taken over by German Benedictine monks in 1876; they had fled a campaign of religious persecution led by Bismarck. Having settled in Erdington, the monks built a two-storey abbey with a square buttressed tower next to the church. The monks departed in the First World War after which the church and abbey were occupied by Redemptorists. The abbey now forms part of Highclare Girls School, but the church, known as Erdington Abbey, is still a Roman Catholic place of worship. At a pre-planning consultation meeting at St Barnabas School, Sainsbury's Community Affairs Manger, Bob Keyes, was told by local residents that the store was neither wanted nor needed, and that it would cause noise and congestion (News Headlines 04/07/11) In October 2011, Sainsbury submitted plans for a 50,000 square foot superstore, 380 parking spaces, 3 independent retail units and a public plaza facing Orphanage Road. In order to keep heavy vehicles off residential streets, the loading bay will be accessed from Sutton Road and not Orphanage Road as originally envisaged (News Headlines 02/10/11). Flat Conversion on Trafalgar Road A former cycle shop on Trafalgar Road will be converted into flats despite concerns that such a development will increase road congestion (News Archive 30/09/10) Lyndhurst Estate The Lyndhurst Estate on Sutton Road is being redeveloped with the planned demolition of 300 houses, two tower blocks and the Lyndhurst Pub and Star Members Club. They will be replaced by 600 modern homes, a youth centre, health centre and new urban park (News Archive 27/11/09). There was speculation in July 2010 that the construction of 262 new council homes on both the Lyndhurst Estate and the Pitts Farm Estate might be deferred since the £254 million project requires PFI funding and the approval of central government (News Archive 23/07/10). In October 2010 planning permission was granted for part of the regeneration project, costed at around £100 million, including 316 new homes, a health centre, youth centre and urban park. The shops in Erdington are centred on the High Street which begins by the Six Ways Roundabout at the intersection of the Outer Circle (A4040), Sutton New Road 9A5127) and Summer Road (B4142). Erdington was once the main retail centre for north-east Birmingham but has lost footfall in recent years, particularly since the Fort Shopping Centre opened in nearby Tyburn in 2002. T he High Street has been pedestrianised and its north end still features several major chainstores, but the other end is largely populated by small independents and charity shops. There is a precinct, called Central Square, roughly halfway down the High Street and a small retail mall, the Swannies, on Sutton New Road. Erdington also has two indoor markets: Erdington Market on Barnabas Road and Wilton Market which has entrances on the High Street and Sutton New Road. The Six Ways Roundabout is a major bus interchange conveniently close to the High Street but Erdington Railway Station is almost half a mile away.Parking is piecemeal: 40 spaces on Machin Road, 63 on Church Road, 166 spaces on Hart Road etc. In the face of declining footfall, Erdington is attempting to transform itself into an urban village, compensating for the increasing absence of major stores by championing small independent shops and ensuring a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants. The parking scheme will be rationalised, access roads broadened, pedestrianised areas extended, street furniture and public sculptures installed. Some of these measures have been implemented; others are still pending.
