The Edgbaston council ward is in south-west Birmingham, roughly
two miles from the city centre. It is flanked by the
Harborne ward, the
Ladywood ward, the
Nechells ward, the
Selly Oak ward, the
Sparkbrook ward and
the Moseley
& Kings Heath ward. The Edgbaston ward contains the areas
of Calthorpe,
Metchley,
University,
Rotton Park and
parts of Bournbrook,
Five Ways,
Attwood Green and
the Chad Valley. |

There are approximately 22,000 people resident in the
Edgbaston ward.
The population density is roughly 23 persons per
hectare compared to an average of around 36.5 for Birmingham as
a whole. The average age is 37 compared to 36 for the city as a
whole.
The white British population accounts for around 58% of all
residents.
Approximately 17% of the population is of Asian origin with
roughly 9.5% from India, 4.5% from Pakistan and 0.5% from
Bangladesh.
Around 8% of the population is black, including 5.5% of
Afro-Caribbean descent.
8.5% are white non-British (including Irish), 3.5% are
of mixed race, and 5% are of Chinese origin or belong to some
other ethnic group.
These estimates may differ from official census data which is
now several years out of date and which was collated in respect
of different ward boundaries.

The Calthorpe area of Edgbaston was traditionally the most
affluent part of Birmingham. It is essentially a Regency suburb
with large open spaces and leafy avenues lined by mansions.
The ward also includes two ex-council estates, Woodview and
Benmore, and high-density private and social housing at Five
Ways and, mingled with Victorian mansions and townhouses, at
Rotton Park.
The university quarter contains three student villages.
The rate of owner occupation in the Edgbaston ward is around
47%. Roughly 21% of homes are rented from private landlords and
27% from the local authority or housing associations. |

Edgbaston ward is roughly 10% compared to an average of around

The major employers are University NHS Hospitals Trust
(around 5000 jobs), University of Birmingham (4500), HSBC
(1200), Birmingham Women's Hospital (1000); Birse Rail (civil
engineers = 500), Hagemeyer (electrical wholesalers = 450), BMI
Priory Hospital (300), Yell (300).
