Overview

Duddeston is in the Nechells ward.

It is named after Dudd's Ton (homestead) and is mentioned in a deed dated 963 AD.

The surrounding areas are Bordesley, Eastside, Nechells and Saltley.

Duddeston remained a wooded rural area in the Rea Valley with a manor house, mill and pleasure gardens until the mid-19th century.

After the Grand Junction Railway was built through Duddeston in the 1830's, the Rea Valley was industrialised and the hall and pleasure gardens were replaced by the Vauxhall Slums.

These slums were redeveloped as the Nechells Green Estate in 1954-69.
