Overview: Deritend
 
Deritend is an area of inner east Birmingham now regarded as part of Digbeth.

It was named after a mediaeval deer (der) park which once covered most of the Rea Valley.

Arts & Media Quarter: Deritend
 
Deritend contains the Custard Factory, also known as the Arts and Media Quarter, which is a 5-acre cluster of buildings converted into studios and offices, mainly occupied by creative arts and media businesses.
Pubs & Clubs: Deritend
 
Deritend contains several pubs, including the Fountain Inn, the White Swan, the Spotted Dog, the Rainbow, the Wagon & Horses, 70 Eight and the Old Crown.

Deritend also contains the Air Superclub.

Live Music: Deritend
 
Deritend has a reputation for live music with venues at the Custard Factory, Spotted Dog, Irish Centre, Rainbow and Wagon & Horses.

The HMV Institute is barely 300 metres from the Custard Factory.

Events/Conferences: Deritend
 
The Custard Factory contains a 1200-capacity events venue called Space 2.

The former Deritend Library also contains a conference and events centre with a 150-banqueting-capacity.

The Old Crown contains an 8-room hotel.
Art Galleries: Deritend
 
Deritend contains Vaad and Vivid.
Theatres: Deritend
 
The Custard Factory contains a 105-seat studio theatre.
Shopping: Deritend
 
The shopping in Deritend mainly consists of specialist independent stores on Gibb Square, Gibb Terrace, Scott House and the surrounding area.
River Rea: Deritend
 
The River Rea was traditionally the boundary between Digbeth and Deritend.

The river now runs in a covered culvert.

In the Middle Ages, travellers had to cross the river in order to enter Birmingham and merchants had to pay tolls to bring goods into the town.

The Old Crown is a mediaeval coaching inn at the former gateway to Birmingham on the east bank of the River Rea.

Notable Buildings: Deritend
 
Deritend features an early-to-mid 20th century industrial townscape.

There are some notable buildings, including a red-brick Romanesque church (St Basils) on Heath Mill Lane, a former Victorian board school on Allcock Street and a red-brick Edwardian office block on High Street Deritend.

There is also a splendid Edwardian church (map) in the style of a Lombardy basilica on Bordesley High Street.

Bordesley Viaduct
 
The 58 arches of the Bordesley viaduct, built by Brunel in the 1850's, carry the Leamington-Worcester line (formerly the Great Western) through Deritend and across the Rea Valley.
Irish Quarter: Deritend
 
Deritend contains part of the Irish Quarter.

The local Irish community, which peaked at 8,500 in the 1960's, has since dispersed but Deritend still contains the Irish Centre and the Irish Welfare and Information Centre.

It also contains several Irish pubs including the Spotted Dog and Fountain Inn.

Chinese Community: Deritend
 
Deritend contains the Birmingham Chinese Community Centre.
Manufacturing: Deritend
 
Deritend is still a largely industrial area with many workshops and warehouses.

These include niche manufacturers such as Hayes & Finch, Zoki, Cameron Robb, Tanair and DR Newman.

Bus Routes: Deritend
 
The following bus routes serve Deritend:

2, 3, 5, 6, 13, 17, 31, 37, 50, 58, 60, 97, 900, 957, X20

Birmingham Coach Station is on Digbeth High Street, barely 350 metres from the Custard Factory.

Train Travel: Deritend
 
Deritend is approximately 750 metres from Moor Street Station and 1 kilometre from New Street Station.

Walk through the Bullring to St Martin's Church and onto Digbeth High Street and then continue for around 500 metres until you reach High Street Deritend.

Car Travel: Deritend
 
The easiest way to get to Deritend is to make for Camp Hill Circus on the A4540 Ring Road and then turn onto the B4100 which after approximately 600 metres becomes High Street Deritend.
Parking: Deritend
 
There is a large surface car park on Heath Mill Lane off High Street Deritend.

There is also a council multi-storey on Moat Lane, Digbeth, roughly 400 metres from the Custard Factory.
