Information Chad Valley

The Chad Valley is an area in the Harborne ward and the Edgbaston ward in south-west Birmingham, roughly two miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Calthorpe, Harborne, Metchley and Rotton Park.

The Chad Valley is named after the Chad Brook, a stream that drains south-eastwards through Harborne and Edgbaston to the River Rea. Saint Chad, who evangelised the Midlands in the early 7th century, might have baptised Saxon converts in the Chad Brook. However, the name is more probably a corruption of Shadwell which means boundary stream in old English.

Chad Valley contains low-rise flats, suburban detached houses and some older Victorian mansions. The area also include the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Club and Edgbaston High School for Girls.
