Calthorpe is an area of Birmingham in the Edgbaston ward, roughly two miles south-west of the city centre. The adjoining areas are Attwood Green, Chad Valley, Five Ways, Harborne, Metchley, Moseley and University. Edgbaston is a corruption of Ecgbald's Tun which is Anglo-Saxon for the farmstead owned by Ecgbald. For most of its history, Edgbaston was a small village centred on Edgbaston Hall and the Church of Saint Bartholomew. Edgbaston Manor was acquired by the Gough family of Perry Hall in 1725. Sir Henry Gough, who also inherited the Calthorpe estate in Norfolk, was created Baron Calthorpe in 1796. The Gough-Calthorpe family developed their Edgbaston estate, by then also known as Calthorpe, as a gentrified suburb in the early 19th century. The area is characterised by mansions and leafy avenues preserved amidst a belt of green spaces. It is one of the most desirable suburbs in Birmingham. St Bartolomews C of E St Bartholomew's on Church Road was originally a mediaeval chapel attached to Edgbaston Hall; however, the present church dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and was largely rebuilt in the Perpendicular Style during the 19th century. The chancel, transepts and Lady Chapel were built by J.A Chatwin in 1889; the south aisle is also Victorian, having been rebuilt in 1856; the older parts are the north aisle (1490), the porch (17th century) and the west tower whose bottom half is 16th century and top half, 17th century. The interior contains wall tablets by William Hollins and King & Sons of Bath. 0121 454 0070 Church Road B15 2UW Landmark Churches - Edgbaston Conservation Area - St Bartholomew's Website SS Mary & Ambrose C of E SS Mary and Ambrose (1898) is an Anglican church in the Gothic style on Raglan Road. 15 Raglan Road B5 7RA - 0121 440 2196 - Map Churches in Birmingham - Saints Mary & Ambrose Website
