Brandwood is in the Brandwood ward in south Birmingham, roughly five miles south from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Lifford, Warstock, Druids Heath and Kings Heath. The name Brandwood is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "brende wood" meaning burnt wood. The name suggests that local woodlands were cleared by fire in order to create the first settlements. The Stratford Canal was cut through Brandwood in the 1790's but the area remained rural, the only significant encroachments being Brandwood End Cemetery, which was laid out in the 1890's, and Monyhull Hospital, which was built in 1905. The first large-scale housing developments appeared between the wars as Kings Heath expanded southwards. These were mainly private semi-detached homes with comparatively large gardens laid out along suburban avenues. After the Second World War, two thousand council houses were built on the remnants of the Monyhull Estate.
