Overview Bournville

Bournville is an area in the Bournville ward in south-west Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Cotteridge, Stirchley, Weoley, Northfield Town and Selly Oak.

Bournville is named after a stream called the Bourn which joins the River Rea near Cartland Road in Stirchley. The Bourn should not be confused with the Bourn Brook which drains through the area of Bournbrook and joins the River Rea at Cannon Hill Park in Moseley.

Bournville was farmland until Richard and George Cadbury, who coined the name Bournville, built their chocolate factory there in 1879. They also built a model village which expanded as the area became urbanised and more farms were sold to developers.

This urban village, which is now managed by the Bournville Village Trust, is characterised by high-quality low-density housing.
