Bournbrook

Bournbrook is an area of south-west Birmingham in the Selly Oak ward, roughly two miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Selly Oak, Selly Park and University.

Bournbrook is named after a stream that flows immediately to the south of Birmingham University and which is bridged at the junction of the Bristol Road and Bournbrook Road before draining into the River Rea at Cannon Hill Park.

The Bourn Brook should not be confused with the Bourn, another stream that drains through Bournville and joins the River Rea at Cartland Road in Stirchley.

Bournbrook remained farmland until the 1880's when several factories relocated to the area and rows of small terraced houses were built for their workers. These factories have since closed and the local economy is now dominated by the University of Birmingham, whose core buildings, the Chamberlain Clocktower and domed Aston Webb Hall, stand on a ridge above Bournbrook

Most of the terraced houses are now owed by property speculators and let to students who are the mainstay of the bars, shops, restaurants and takeaways that line the Bristol Road.

In August 2010, a private landlord was fined £20,000 for failing to obtain multiple occupancy licenses for six student houses on Rookery Road, Coronation Road and Heeley Road (News Archive 03/08/10).

Tiverton Pool and Fitness Centre

Tiverton Pool & Fitness Centre is a listed Edwardian building on Tiverton Road that contains a pulse point gym, sauna, instruction pool and swimming pool with spectator seating. Parking for 12 vehicles is available.

The centre offers activities such as fitness classes, studio cycling, swimming instruction, lane swimming, water polo, acquatone and women-only gym sessions.

Selly Oak Substation

Selly Oak substation (1890) is at the rear of 659 Bristol Road. Designed in the style of a French Gothic Chapel, it was originally a steam-powered water-pumping station.

The brick and terracotta facade has elaborate cut brickwork and floral mouldings; the north wall features a staircase turret, an apse with clerestory, and a triple arcade of blind arches; there is a buttressed staircase on the east wall and a transept on the south wall.
