Bordesley is an area of east Birmingham in the Nechells council ward, roughly one mile from the city centre. The name is a corruption of "Bord's Leah" which means the clearing owned by Bord. The surrounding areas are Digbeth, Eastside, Saltley, Small Heath and Sparkbrook. For most of its history, Bordesley was farmland on a busy, but poorly-maintained road that connected Birmingham to Warwick and Coventry. As Birmingham prospered, a commercial centre evolved on Bordesley High Street where traders could do business without entering the town and incurring additional taxes. The Warwick and Birmingham Canal (now the Grand Union) was cut through Bordesley in the 1790's and Bordesley Junction was created in 1844 when a second channel was cut, extending the canal northwards to Salford Junction. These watercourses were followed by the Great Western Railway which was laid through Bordesley in the 1850's. Bordesley Station, which opened in 1852, was the main terminus for cattle being transported to the Bullring. These transport routes attracted industrial development and densely-packed terraced housing, most of which was cleared in the 1960's to make way for new road schemes such as Bordesley Circus, Camp Hill Circus and Middleway. The remaining terraces survived until the 1980's when they were replaced by Bordesley Village: a private and social housing estate centred on a landscaped park and small shopping centre.
