Information Bordesley Green

Bordesley Green is an area in the Bordesley Green ward in east Birmingham, roughly two miles from the city centre. It is named after a green (i.e. common grazing land) once owned by the Manor of Bordesley. The surrounding areas are Saltley, Stechford, Yardley, Alum Rock and Small Heath.

Bordesley Green remained rural until the late 19th century when Birmingham expanded eastwards and terraced housing was built on either side of Bordesley Green Road.

A hospital (now Heartlands) was constructed on Howlets Farm in the 1890's and the Ideal Benefit Society built homes for aspiring owner-occupiers in the early 1900's.

After Yardley was annexed in 1911, the city boundary was pushed even further eastwards and Bachelors Farm in the Cole Valley was developed as a council estate in the 1920's, effectively merging Bordesley Green and Yardley.
