Boldmere is an area in the Sutton Vesey ward in north Birmingham, roughly five miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Erdington Town, New Oscott, Short Heath, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield Town and Wylde Green. Boldmere is a corruption of "bald moor" which means a treeless bog . The bog in question was probably wetland around the in-filled Baldmoor Lake which lies between the Chester Road and Court Lane. Boldmere remained largely rural until the late 19th century when ribbon development occurred along the major traffic routes prompted by the opening of Wylde Green Railway Station in 1862 and Chester Road Railway Station in 1863. Most of the surrounding fields were developed in the 1930's as low-density detached and semi-detached private and municipal housing estates. Some high-density housing, low-rise flats and a residential tower were added in the 1960's. However, the area remained a comparatively affluent suburb with a commercial centre at the junction of Boldmere Road and Jockey Road.
