Overview Birchfield

Birchfield is an area of north Birmingham in the Aston ward, roughly two miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Aston, Newtown, Lozells, Handsworth and Perry Barr.

Birchfield was farmland, identified by the birch trees that grew in local fields, until first developed in the early 19th century along the line of the Birchfield Road (A34), a major traffic route that links Birmingham to Walsall.

Nowadays, the area is characterised by pre-1919 terraced housing, tower blocks on the Birchfield Road and traffic flow measures including the flyover at Trinity Road and the underpasses at Aston Six Ways and Aston Lane.
