Information Bartley Green Area

Bartley Green is an area in the Bartley Green council ward in south-west Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Allens Cross, Frankley, Shenley, Weoley and Woodgate.

Bartley is a corruption of "beorc leah" meaning a settlement in a birch clearing. The addition of "Green" implies that some land was set aside for common grazing.

Bartley Green was a small rural village at the junction of Adams Hill, Jiggins Lane and Genners Lane until two drinking-water reservoirs were built there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The village quickly became urbanised and later merged with neighbouring housing estates constructed on Bangham Pit Farm and Ley Hill between 1935 and 1960 and on Kitwell Manor in the 1970's.

Bartley Green and the Birmingham Water Supply

The water supply for Birmingham is provided by five reservoirs at the Elan Valley in central Wales. The first four were constructed in 1893-1904 and the fifth, in 1946-52.

The water is piped 73 miles from the Elan Valley to Bartley Green via a covered aqueduct. It travels by force of gravity on a gradient of 1:2300, descending a mere 166 feet over the entire distance.

Upon arrival, the water is stored in Frankley Reservoir and Bartley Reservoir before it is treated and distributed to homes, factories and offices etc.

The tap water in Birmingham is exceptionally soft since Welsh water from the Elan Valley has an unusually low level of dissolved impurities.
