Attwood Green is a newly-designated residential quarter in
central Birmingham. It contains the Central Area Estates,
namely: Park
Central, Five
Ways, Woodview, Benmore and the Sentinels (Clydesdale
&
Cleveland Towers).
These housing estates, as originally built by the council in
1955-72, suffered from structural problems,
particularly damp, poor insulation and leaking roofs.
Most residents stayed because they could not afford to move,
creating sink estates with social problems.
In 1999, Birmingham City Council
transferred the Central Area Estates to the Optima Housing
Association who, in partnership with Crest Nicholson,
redeveloped the housing stock.
Around 1500 homes have been demolished and roughly the same
number refurbished; over 500 new homes have been built,
including executive-style townhouses and family apartments.
A new public park has been created on the Lee Bank Housing
Estate; the Woodview tower blocks have been demolished and only
1 tower block still stands at Benmore.
In order to avoid "the sink estate cycle", many of these
homes have been privately sold to affluent professionals who
want to live near the city centre.
This process has involved rebranding the Central Area Estates
as the Attwood Green Quarter after
Thomas Attwood, the first MP for Birmingham in 1832. |
