Custard Factory: Overview |
|

|
The Custard Factory is a 5-acre cluster of workshops,
warehouses and offices in Deritend that have been refurbished as an Arts and Media Quarter.
Part of the site was once owned by Birds Custard. |

Core Buildings: Custard Factory |
|
|
|
The core buildings are: (1) Scott House
(2) Green House & Gibb Square (3)
Devonshire House
(4) Gibb Terrace and (5) the
Free Library. They are linked
by Gibb Street which features colourful wall murals. |

Scott House |
|
|
|
Scott House is on the west side of Gibb Street off High Street
Deritend. It is a former factory converted into 80 offices and
studios for small companies employing between 3 and 20 staff.
The size of units ranges from 300 to 2000 square feet.
Scott House also contains shops, dance studios and a
105-seat
theatre.
It also includes the Kitchen Cafe, the
Vaad Art
Gallery, a bar & restaurant called
70 Eight and
a 1200-capacity events venue called Space 2.
A former loading bay in front of Scott House has been flooded
to create an ornamental lake and is occasionally drained for use as an outdoor dance
floor.

Green House |

Green House is on the east side of Gibb Street off High Street
Deritend. It is a former industrial building which has been
refurbished as 100 studios for small companies employing between
1 and 8 staff.
The size of units range from 170 square feet to 600 square
feet.
The complex includes ground-floor retail units.
Green House overlooks a continental-style plaza known as Gibb
Square whose centrepiece is an ornamental pool with fountains.
The entrance to Gibb Square is dominated by a 14-metre
stone-and-vegetation sculpture of the mythical Green Man. |

Gibb Terrace |

Gibb Terrace is an old Victorian workshop on Gibb Street. It
has been converted into 5 retail units with mezzanine floors. |

Deritend Library |
|
|
|
Deritend Library is a former Victorian lending library on Gibb
Street. It was built in 1866 and is the oldest library
building in Birmingham.
Deritend Library has been converted into a conference centre
and event space with a maximum capacity of 150 for banquets and
300 for drinks receptions. |

Devonshire House (aka
Zellig) |
|
|
|
Devonshire House, also known as Zellig, is an Edwardian office
block that fronts High Street Deritend with a side
elevation on Gibb Street. It has been converted into 101
studios, offices and retail units ranging in size from 350
to 1700 square feet. And features 3 interconnected courtyards
linked by glass bridges and a vast "floating" steel-and-glass
sculpture. |

The Custard Factory contains independent retail units,
selling: vintage clothes, corsets, bridal gowns, hi-fi & home
cinema, musical instruments, printing services, footwear,
photographic services, jewellery, cycles, skateboards, sewing &
craft materials, picture framing, clothing and herbal medicines. |

The Custard Factory is barely 250 metres from the
HMV
Institute on Digbeth and barely 100 metres from the
Air Superclub on
Heath Mill Lane. There are also several pubs nearby, including
the Old Crown,
the Big
Bulls Head, the
Kerryman,
Rainbow,
White Swan
and Anchor.

There is a large uncovered surface car park on
Heath Mill Lane, barely 100 metres from the Custard Factory. |

Car Travel: Custard
Factory |

Head towards Birmingham from any direction and take the A4540
Ring Road shortly before reaching the city centre. Continue on
the Ring Road until you reach Camp Hill Circus (by DFS store).
At Camp Hill Circus take the B4100 towards the city centre;
the name of this road changes from Camp Hill to High Street
Bordesley to High Street Deritend.
Turn right into Heath Mill Lane by the Old Crown (a
timber-framed medieval inn).
Continue on Heath Mill Lane until you reach the Air Super
Club and then turn right into the Custard Factory car park.
Should the Custard Factory car park be unavailable, you
should continue on the B4100 towards the city centre and park at
the council multi-storey on
Moat Lane, roughly 400 metres from the Custard Factory. |

Train Travel: Custard

New Street Station is about 1 kilometre and
Moor
Street Station is about 750 metres from the Custard Factory.
Simply walk through the Bullring to St Martin's Church at the
top of Digbeth High Street and then continue another 500 or so
metres, past the Kerryman, the Big Bulls Head and the HMV
Academy before turning left into Gibb Street. |
