Information Alum Rock

Alum Rock is an area of east Birmingham in the Washwood Heath ward, roughly three miles from the city centre. It is named after the mineral, Alum Rock, that was traditionally used for the curing of leather. The surrounding areas are Saltley, Stechford, Bordesley Green, Hodge Hill, Ward End and Washwood Heath.

Alum Rock was first developed as a residential suburb in the 1920's. Rows of terraced houses were laid either side of Alum Rock Road which links Saltley and Ward End.

The last patch of open countryside, Cotteril Farm in the Cole Valley, was developed as a council estate with three residential towers after the Second World War.
