Overview Acocks Green Village

Acocks Green Village is an area in the Acocks Green ward in south-east Birmingham, roughly four miles from the city centre. The surrounding areas are Fox Hollies, Stockfield, Tyseley and Olton.

Acocks Green is named after the Acock family who farmed the area in the Middle Ages. There may once have been a traditional village green, but the modern green is a grassed-over disused tram terminus at the junction of Shirley Road, Westley Road and Warwick Road.

Acocks Green is a major suburban centre but congestion, noise, pollution, poor parking and competition from Shirley and Solihull have diminished its attraction. The town centre and environs have been rebranded as an urban village.

Shopping at Acocks Green

The shops at Acocks Green are centred on the junction of Warwick Road (A41), Westley Road (B4146) and Shirley Road.

The traffic island at this junction resembles a traditional village green, but is actually a grassed-over tram terminus that has become a congestion bottleneck.

Most shops are on Warwick Road; the main route between Solihull and Birmingham city centre.

There are several chainstores including Argos, Bon Marche, Dorothy Perkins, Iceland, Sainsbury, Shoe Zone, Wilkinsons, Prontaprint and Pizza Hut.

Acocks Green also has many independent stores; however, there are an increasing number of boarded-up premises, charity shops, takeaways, moneylenders and pawnbrokers.

The area is blighted by constant traffic, noise, clutter and a lack of parking spaces. Consequently, it has lost footfall to more accessible shopping centres, particularly at Shirley and Solihull.

Acocks Green could do with a relief road that would enable the creation of a pedestrian zone.

In the meantime, it is attempting to reinvent itself as an urban village with bars, cafes, restaurants and other attractions in addition to shops.

Proposed Acocks Green Conservation Area

Proposals were submitted in 2008 for a conservation area in Acocks Green Village that would include, in particular, the Victorian terraced houses on Flint Green Road and Sherbourne Road.

Many of these homes are now being altered or redeveloped, possibly to avoid the stricter planning regulations that would apply if the conservation area were designated.
