Sutton Coldfield High Street Conservation Area |
|
|
|
The Sutton Coldfield High Street Conservation Area was first
designated as a setting for Holy Trinity church and the
adjoining Vesey Memorial Gardens, but was subsequently extended
to include King Edward Square and Sutton Coldfield Town Hall.
As such, the designated area contains the historic core of
Sutton Coldfield and several other listed buildings including
the Royal Hotel (1865), Vesey House (1700) and the Three Tuns
pub (1600).
There are also substantial Georgian villas on the High Street
and Coleshill Street and Victorian terraces and semi-detached
pairs in the vicinity of Upper Clifton Road. |

Holy Trinity Church |
|
|

Holy Trinity on Church Hill dates from around 1300 but was almost entirely rebuilt by Bishop
Vesey in the 1530's; indeed, only the plinth and buttress beneath the
East Window survive from the medieval building.
Bishop Vesey's tomb in the north Chapel features a splendid effigy
carved in 1555; other treasures include a chapel altar, stalls and
screens carved from oak panelling discarded by Worcester Cathedral in
1875.
The north aisle, gallery and font were added in 1879; C.E.Bateman
decorated the chancel ceiling in 1914 and the nave and Vesey
Chapel in 1929. |
