Overview High Street Conservation Area

The High Street Conservation Area in Sutton Coldfield Town was first designated as a setting for the historic Holy Trinity parish church and the adjoining Vesey Memorial Gardens.

It was subsequently extended to include Sutton Coldfield Town Hall, King Edward Square and the town's Victorian railway station.

As such, it contains the historic core of Sutton Coldfield and several buildings of architectural interest including the Royal Hotel (1865), Vesey House (circa 1700) and the Three Tuns pub (circa 1600).

The character of the designated area as an historic market town is further enhanced by substantial Georgian villas on both Coleshill Street and the High Street.

There are also numerous terraced and semi-detached Victorian homes in the vicinity of Upper Clifton Road.

Holy Trinity stands on Church Hill on the north side of Sutton Coldfield town centre; it is the historic parish church of Sutton Coldfield and is mediaeval in origin; however, although it was first built in 1300, the church was almost entirely rebuilt by Bishop Vesey in the 1530's; indeed, only the plinth and buttress beneath the East Window have survived from the original building.

Bishop Vesey's tomb is interred the north Chapel; his effigy was carved in 1555; however, the chapel altar, stalls and screens are Victorian; they were added in 1875 and were carved from oak panelling discarded by Worcester Cathedral.

The north aisle, gallery and font were added in 1879; C.E.Bateman painted the chancel ceiling in 1914 and decorated the nave and Vesey Chapel in 1929.
