The Steelhouse Lane Conservation Area consists of a largely
unbroken late Victorian townscape in the Business Quarter of central
Birmingham. The designated area emerged from the creation of
Corporation Street in the 1880's. It contains several landmark
listed buildings including the Victoria Law Courts, the Children's
Hospital and Central Methodist Hall.
Although architectural styles vary, there is a preponderance
of richly-decorated neo-classical red-brick and terracotta
buildings that display civic pride, commercial wealth and
religious certitude.
Interwar development is largely sympathetic and includes the
neo-Georgian Coroners Court, Central Fire Station and Central
Police Station.
Post-war buildings generally favoured a horizontal axis, flat
roofline and simple detail as exemplified by the Crown Court on
Newton Street. This website contains an
index of
statutory listed buildings in the Gun Quarter which includes
the Steelhouse Lane Conservation Area. |
