The Selly Avenues Conservation Area is on the east side of the A441 Pershore Road,
next to Cannon Hill Park. It contains
First Avenue, Second Avenue, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Sir
John's Road and part of Pershore Road. The designated area was
laid out as an estate of red-brick terraced houses with stone
dressings in 1905-08. None of the houses are listed, but many
have interesting features such as Gothic-arch doorways,
stained-glass panels and timber-sash windows. Most have large
rear gardens and small front gardens divided by boundary walls.
The area includes Selly Park Tavern (1901) on the Pershore Road
which is a locally-listed brick building with a prominent central gable
flanked by chimney stacks. A stone shield beneath the gable is
inscribed with the initials "H LD" which stand for Holders
Brewery Limited. |
