The School Road Conservation Area is on the east side of the
A4040 Fox Hollies Road in the Hall Green area of south
Birmingham. It contains Miall Road and parts of School Road,
Shirley Road and Lakey Lane. The designated area provides a
setting for the Charles Lane Trust Almshouses and the Maggies
pub. The Charles Lane Trust Almshouses were built in the
Jacobean Style in the 1930's. The single-storey brick almshouses
feature stone mullioned windows, pitched tiled roofs and tall
chimney stacks. They are grouped around three sides of a green
whose open end faces Fox Hollies Road.
The Maggies (1935) stands at the corner of Shirley Road and
School Road. Built in 1935, its rectilinear design and elegant
brickwork were heavily influenced by the Bauhaus School. The pub
has a roof terrace and its own bowling green whose pavilion is
also a listed building. The surrounding houses are mainly
suburban semi-detached pairs of interwar build with subtle
variations in design and materials. Many have rustic-faced brick
facades, bay windows with leaded lights and semi-circular arched
porches. |
