The Old Yardley Conservation Area on the east side of the
A4040 Stoney Lane contains the nucleus of the old village of
Yardley. It provides a setting for several listed buildings,
including the Saxon church of Saint Edburgha, the half-timbered
medieval Old Grammar School and an early 19th century brick
house that was once a pub called the Talbot Inn. Other notable
buildings include an early Victorian church hall and a large
post-war vicarage set in ample grounds. There is also a row of
18th century cottages opposite the church and substantial Victorian villas on Church Terrace.
The designated area is screened by Old Yardley Park, once the
site of a fortified mediaeval manor, which lends it a semi-rural
character. |
