Old Yardley Conservation Area

The Old Yardley Conservation Area on the east side of the A4040 Stoney Lane contains the nucleus of the old village of Yardley.

It provides a setting for several listed buildings, including the Saxon church of Saint Edburgha, the half-timbered medieval Old Grammar School and an early 19th century brick house that was once a pub called the Talbot Inn.

Other notable buildings include an early Victorian church hall and a large post-war vicarage set in ample grounds. There is also a row of 18th century cottages opposite the church and substantial Victorian villas on Church Terrace.

The designated area is screened by Old Yardley Park, once the site of a fortified mediaeval manor, which lends it a semi-rural character.

St. Edburgha's on Church Road dates from the 13th century; it is built in sandstone and consists of a chancel, nave, aisles, west tower & octagonal spire.

The chancel and nave were rebuilt and the transepts added in the 14th century; the north aisle, spire, tower and timber-framed porch date from the 15th century; the chancel was enlarged and the vestry added in the late 19th century.

The interior contains a Jacobean pulpit, an alabaster slab inscribed Thomas and Marion Est (1492); a West Window portraying the Last Supper by Hardman (1892) and a curious curtained cave with statues of former vicar Henry Greswolde and his wife encircled by medallion portraits of their 11 children (circa 1700).

Yardley Old Grammar on Church Road is a 4-bay 2-storey timber-frame building with vertical studding and rear Victorian brick-facing that dates from around 1490.

The left gable end and first floor are jettied; the ground floor of the far right bay has been faced with painted-brick.

Two Victorian houses have been added to the far right bay: one has a painted brick facade with a dentilled cornice; the other is a red-brick cottage with segment-headed windows. The building closed as a school in 1908.
