Northfield Conservation Area

The Northfield Conservation Area on the south side of the B4121 Bunbury Road contains Rectory Road and part of Church Hill.

It provides a setting for the mediaeval church of Saint Laurence and a group of listed buildings that include a Victorian church school, a half-timbered brick barn, and the Great Stone Inn: a mediaeval pub rebuilt in whitewashed brick in the 18th century and named after a glacial erratic in the nearby 15th century pound.

The housing stock includes substantial Victorian villas with large mature gardens and two rows of early 19th century stone cottages that once doubled as nailmaker's workshops.

St Laurence's Church

Saint Laurence's is a mediaeval church that dates from the 12th century; it stands on Church Hill overlooking Northfield town centre and is built in locally-quarried grey sandstone.

The oldest parts of the church are the base of its tower, the pillars of its chancel arch and the doorway on the northern side of the nave; these are Norman, probably dating from 1170.

The nave and chancel were built in the 12th century; the south aisle dates from the 14th century and the south porch from the 15th century; the matching north aisle was built in 1900.

The tower has been rebuilt several times throughout its history; the base may be 12th century, but the middle section is 13th century and the upper section, 15th century.

There are two badly-eroded animals heads on the south side of the tower and two on the north side; these are 11th century Saxon corbels taken from an older building, probably another church.
