Barnsley Road Conservation Area

The Barnsley Road Conservation Area is in the Rotton Park area of Edgbaston. It includes Barnsley Road and parts of City Road, Sandon Road and Hagley Road.

The designated area contains several Victorian mansions with extensive mature gardens, some of which were designed in the Arts and Crafts Style by Ernest Barnsley (1863-1926)

The designation is controversial because large Victorian houses of this type are rarely practical for use as private homes and would probably have been demolished or redeveloped if they had been located outside the conservation area. Indeed some are now empty and vulnerable to vandals and arsonists.

Several such houses on the Hagley Road were earmarked for demolition in September 2010; they will be replaced by a retirement village managed by the Extra Care Charitable Trust (News Archive 02/09/10).
