Redevelopment of Edgbaston Cricket Stadium
(Top) |
|
|
|
Until recently the stadium was antiquated and at risk of losing
its test status since most of the stands dated back to the
1930's and the last major development had been the Eric
Hollies Stand in the 1970's. So in order to preserve Edgbaston
as a test venue, the Pavilion End (nearest Edgbaston Road) was
redeveloped in 2009-11.
The old Pavilion, the Leslie Deakins Stand and the RV Ryder
Stand were demolished and replaced by
a new stand with 8,250 seats, roughly 3,500 more than the
demolished stands. The new stand contains a 700-capacity banqueting and
conference centre that will eventually replace a semi-permanent events
marquee on the Pershore Road; shops, offices and apartments are
being built on the Edgbaston Road frontage.
Overall capacity has been increased from 21,000 to 25,000.
The Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the new stand, and the luxury Jaguar and 1882 Club Suites, on Monday 25th
July 2011
(News Headlines (20/07/11). |

Edgbaston
Loses Test Status for Three Years |
|
|
|
Despite its £32 million refurbishment, Edgbaston Cricket Stadium
will lose its test status for 3 years from summer 2012. After
the West Indies test in 2012, Edgbaston will miss out on the
Ashes series in 2013 and will not be a test venue for the Indian
and Sri Lankan tour in 2014.
However, it will host an Ashes test in 2015
(News
Headlines 23/09/11). |

New
Floodlights @ Edgbaston Cricket Stadium |
|
|
|
Five 50-metre cantilevered floodlight masts with precision
reflectors to direct light onto the pitch were installed in
December 2010. Local residents complained that they were an
eyesore and detracted from the parkland character of the
surrounding area
(News Headlines 14/12/10). The first match was played
under these floodlights in July 2011
(News
Headlines 19/07/11). |
