Overview
 
The Alexander Athletics Stadium is on Stadium Way at Perry Park in the Perry Barr area of north Birmingham.

It has a capacity of 7,600 and was built for the Birchfield Harriers in 1975-76.

The stadium contains an 8-lane synthetic track with a 10-lane sprinter's home straight.

There are three stands: the Main Stand, parallel to the home straight, and the Knowles Stand and Nelson Stand which flank the Main Stand at acute angles and so provide good views of the bends.

These three stands can hold around 7,000 spectators; an area of covered seating on the rear straight holds an additional 600.

The stadium contains a hospitality suite with a conference room, seminar room and VIP boxes overlooking the track.

The hospitality suite can stage functions (with catering) for up to 80 guests.

 
High Performance Centre @ Alexander Stadium (Top)
 
The Alexander Stadium contains a High Performance Centre that includes a 132-metre indoor hall with an 8-lane 110-metre running track, throwing cage, pole vaulting area & jumping pits.

Other facilities include a medical support clinic, recovery area, gymnasium and sports science lab.

The centre coaches athletes of all ages and abilities; the indoor hall may be hired by clubs, schools and individual athletes.

The Alexander Stadium contains a pulse point gym, power point gym and free weights gym open to the general public.

Activities include aerobics, athletics, boxercise, circuit training, studio cycling, starter fitness, weight watchers, bums, tums and thighs.

 
Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre @ Alexander Stadium (Top)
 
The Birmingham Gymnastics and Martial Arts Centre is based at the Alexander Stadium.

It consists of three martial arts rooms and a gymnastics hall with a floor area of 1857 sq. metres and a spectators gallery with 400 seats.

Planned Expansion of Alexander Stadium (Top)
 
Plans for a £10 million refurbishment of the Alexander Stadium were approved in July 2010. Amongst other things, the running track will be resurfaced and a new 5,000-seat stand will be built (News Archive 19/07/10).

The council cabinet approved a revised £12.25 million refurbishment in September 2010 which also includes a state-of-the-art gym and office complex. Work will begin in October 2010 and should be finished by June 2011 (News Archive 28/09/10).

It was reported in September 2010 that UK Athletics will be headquartered at the refurbished stadium (News Archive 27/09/10). However, no legal agreement has yet been signed (News Archive 14/10/10) and UK Athletics has refused to confirm the move (News Archive 11/03/11).

 
2012 Olympics @ Alexander Stadium (Top)
 
The Alexander Stadium will provide training facilities for the US Athletics team prior to the 2012 London Olympics.
