Aston Manor Cricket Club (Index) Aston Manor is an amateur cricket club on Church Lane in Perry Barr. The club was established in 1903. It fields three teams; the first eleven plays in Division Two of the Birmingham League. The club also operates a youth section with coaching programmes. It has been awarded Club Mark Status by Sports England in recognition of its high quality coaching of young cricketers. Three former junior players have represented England at youth team level and two have signed contracts with Warwickshire County Cricket Club. The club is located on Sunnybank Avenue at Perry Common in Kingstanding; it fields four senior rugby teams, two senior cricket teams and a squash team. The junior section includes cricket and rugby teams. Membership is no longer restricted to former grammar school boys. The facilities include sports pitches, a clubhouse and two squash courts. The club was established in 1874 by four members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel in neighbouring Lozells. Aston Villa was a founder member of the English football league in 1888 and currently plays in the Premiership, the top tier of English domestic competition. The team, whose colours are claret and blue, has played at Villa Park since 1897 having previously been based at Aston Park (1874 -1876) and Perry Barr (1876-1897). Aston Villa was originally established as a mutual association but the club is now owned by a public limited company controlled by Randy Lerner, a U.S. entrepreneur who also owns the Cleveland Browns American football team. It was established by newly-arrived Pakistani immigrants in the 1970's and is named after the Attock District of the Punjab Province in Pakistan. The club operates four senior Saturday teams and under 15, under 13 and under 11 teams. The first XI plays in the first division of the Birmingham & District Premier Cricket League; the club also competes in the Sunday Warwickshire League. The sailing club, which also welcomes canoeists and windsurfers, is an RYA-approved water sports centre. It possesses a fleet of sailing dinghies including types RS200, RS400, RS600 and Solo, Supernova, Laser and Mirror classes. The facilities include a purpose-built club house with restaurant, bar, showers, lockers and changing rooms. There is also an on-site car park and secure boat park. The club provides starter and basic skills training so that novices may learn to rig and launch a boat and sail her in moderate winds. The social calendar includes skittle evenings and family fun afternoons. Links: Bartley Green Bartley Sailing Club Website Birchfield Harriers (also known as the Stags) is one of the foremost athletics clubs in the UK. It was established in 1877 and was based at Perry Barr Stadium until 1976 when it relocated to the Alexander Stadium in Perry Park. The club has a running stag as its emblem. Such a stag, carved in art deco style by William Bloye, still adorns the Perry Barr Stadium, now a speedway and dog track. The Birchfield Harriers promote community participation through family, associate and academy schemes. Members may participate in training groups run by professional coaches and may use the club facilities which include the clubroom, the 3 physiotherapy rooms, the Indoor High Performance Centre, the external throwing area and the track and field at the Alexander Stadium. The Birchfield Harriers have consistently produced elite athletes; indeed, its members have competed at every Olympiad since 1908. The club was formed in 2003 following the merger of two former works teams: Kynoch (established 1924) and Birchfield (established 1957). It is based at the Moor Lane Pavilion on the campus of Birmingham City University in Perry Barr. The club, which was founded in 1928, closed in 1986, but was revived in 2006. The team, whose colours are red and yellow, competes in the Speedway Premier League: the second tier of domestic speedway. The club was founded in 1875 as the Small Heath Alliance but was renamed Small Heath in 1888, Birmingham FC in 1905 and Birmingham City FC in 1943. The club was a founder member of FA League Division Two in 1896 and currently competes in the Premiership: the top tier of English domestic football. The team, whose colours are royal blue, has played at Saint Andrews since 1906 having previously been based in Sparkbrook and on Muntz Street in Small Heath. Birmingham City FC was originally an unincorporated members association but is now owned by a private company controlled by Carson Yeung: a Hong-Kong businessman. The club, which was established in 1873, welcomes rowers of all ages and abilities. The facilities include a boathouse and changing rooms, which are shared with the University of Birmingham Boat Club. The club hosts the Birmingham Regatta on the reservoir in April; the regatta can only be held over the full distance of 750 metres if the reservoir is full. The pavilion (1902) is a listed building in the Edwardian arts and crafts style. Bournville fields three Saturday teams, two Sunday teams and a veterans team: the Bournville Sophists. The first XI plays in Division One of the Warwickshire Cricket League which acts a feeder league for the Birmingham & District Premier Cricket League. The Bournville Harriers (est. 2000) is a running club that meets at Rowheath Pavilion on Heath Road in Bournville. Its members compete in cross-country, marathon, fell, track and road races; several also participate in triathlons. New members of all abilities and experience are welcome. Fourteen licensed coaches advise upon fitness and training schedules. The club holds an annual 10km road race through Bournville and Northfield in July. There are regular social events. The club was founded in 1902 as part of Bournville Athletic based on the playing fields next to the Cadbury chocolate factory. Nowadays the teams play at King Edwards School for Girls in Edgbaston and at the University of Birmingham. A Sunday youth academy is held at Colmers Community Leisure Centre in Longbridge. It responded to a shortage of players in the 1980's by developing a successful colts section which gave local schoolchildren the chance to learn the game. Bounrville fields three men's teams, a woman's team and a veteran's team: the Hippos. The junior section accepts boys and girls aged eight and above. There are regular social events including the annual dinner and Christmas party. Links: Bournville Bournville Rugby Club Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Club (Index) Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Club, also known as the Archery, is a private members club set in parkland adjoining the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Westbourne Road in the Chad Valley area of Edgbaston. The club was established in 1860 as an archery society. Croquet was introduced from 1870 and tennis from 1873, four years before the formation of the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon. The Archery is therefore the world's oldest lawn tennis club. The facilities include six grass courts, four shale courts and two floodlit artificial grass courts. The club, which employs two resident LTA coaches, fields men's, ladies and mixed teams; there is a mini tennis centre for children under ten and a junior section for older children. The club maintains close links with Edgbaston School for Girls and Lordswood School: a designated sports college in Harborne. The social committee organises a regular programme of events and the clubhouse can be hired for private functions. It fields eight men's teams, five ladies teams, a mixed team, a veteran's team and a colts team: the Edghogs. Home fixtures and training sessions are held on water-based pitches at the University of Birmingham or on a sand-dressed pitch at Edgbaston High School for Girls. There are regular social events. The club was formed in 1964 following the merger of the Priory Lawn Tennis Club (est. 1875) and Edgbaston Lawn Tennis Club (est. 1878). The emblem, a phoenix rising from the ashes, symbolises the revival of the Priory Club whose clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1963. The Edgbaston Priory is one of the most prestigious sporting clubs in the UK. Its facilities include an indoor and outdoor pool, a techno gym fitness centre, a licensed bar and restaurant, ten squash courts and twenty-nine tennis courts. The club, which employs several professional coaches, fields squash, tennis and racket teams that regularly compete in regional and national leagues. It hosts prestigious tournaments including the National Racketball Championships, the English Squash Open, and the Aegon Classic: a WTA international series event with prize money of $220,000. The club, which was established in 1915, leases its premises from the Calthorpe Estate. The facilities include a clubhouse and three full-size croquet lawns. Both "association" and "golf" versions of croquet are played; coaching and equipment are available free of charge. The club holds Croquet Association and West Midland Federation Tournaments: its facilities may be hired for private and corporate parties. Club afternoons are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays when teas are served. However, members can play at any time unless a tournament is in progress. Erdington Court Bowls Club is on Bowling Green Close off Goosemoor Lane in the Short Heath area of Erdington. The club, which was founded in 1925, is affiliated to the English Indoor Bowling Association and the Warwickshire County Bowls Association. The facilities include artificial indoor and outdoor bowling greens. The outdoor season runs from May to September and the indoor season from October to April. The club competes in men's and ladies' league and cup competitions and also plays social matches. New players are welcome. Bowls may be hired and a qualified coach can advise beginners. The club fields three Saturday and three Sunday teams. The 1st X1 plays in Division Two of the Warwickshire Cricket League. There is also a junior section with over 150 members under the age of 16. The facilities include 4 outdoor nets, a bowling machine, an artificial wicket, two roll-on batting cages and a flicx pitch for juniors. The club hosts a regular programme of social events. The club hosts an LTA Ratings Tournament with total prize money of £750 and fields men's and ladies teams that compete in local leagues. The men's first team recently won the Warwickshire Inter-District Trophy at the Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre. The facilities include eleven tennis courts, three of which have floodlights; there is also a clubhouse with changing rooms, showers, a licensed bar and function room that can host banquets for up to 80 guests. The club holds a regular programme of social events including monthly supper nights, themed evenings and an annual dinner dance and barbecue. It was formed from an amalgamation of two park teams: Continental and Rangers and initially known as Continental Rangers but renamed Handsworth Cricket Club in 2001. The club fields 3 Saturday teams, a women's Sunday team and 5 youth teams. The first XI play in the premier division of the Warwickshire Cricket League. The hockey club fields six men's teams and four ladies' teams that play competitive league hockey. There is also a mixed team, veteran's teams and seven-a-side indoor team. Both the men's and ladies' first XI play in the Midlands Premier Division: the top tier of Midlands regional hockey. Matches are played at the University of Birmingham or King Edwards School. The club regularly fields three teams on Saturday. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome; the junior section offers tag rugby to boys and girls aged seven to eleven. The club organises rugby tours and holds social events, including an annual dinner. The club, which was established in 1870, is divided into cricket, hockey, bowls, squash, archery, tennis and junior football sections. The cricket section fields three Saturday teams and two Sunday teams. The 1st X1 plays in the Premier Division of the Warwickshire Cricket League. Both boys and girls can join the junior cricket club from school year 4 onwards. The hockey section fields four men's teams, two ladies teams, a junior team and veterans team. The men's first XI play in the West Midlands Premier Division and the ladies first XI in Division One of the Worcestershire League. The club facilities include cricket pitches, hockey pitches, tennis courts, squash courts, a bowling green, restaurant, sports bar and two function rooms. Links: Kings Heath Kings Heath Cricket and Sports Club Website Lordswood Dixonians are based at Lordswood Boys School on the Hagley Road in Harborne. The club was formed in 1913 as the Old Dixonians by former pupils of George Dixon Grammar School. The team was recruited from ex-pupils of this school until it became a comprehensive and abandoned rugby. The Old Dixonians subsequently relocated outside of Birmingham but returned in the mid 1990's, establishing themselves at Lordswood School and adopting the name Lordsword Dixonians. The club fields 1st and 2nd XI's; home fixtures are played at Lordswood School or at Moor Lane Pavilion on the campus of Birmingham City University in Perry Barr. Links: Harborne Lordswood Dixonians Website The Midland Sailing Club is based on Icknield Port Road on the shores of Edgbaston Reservoir in Ladywood; it is an accredited RYA training centre that offers novice, refresher and junior courses. The club maintains a fleet of dinghies including GP14, Merlin Rocket, Enterprise and Solo classes. Races are generally held on Saturday afternoons and on Wednesday evenings in the summer. The facilities include a galley with licensed bar that hosts social events such as barbecues, themed suppers and family fun days. Links: Ladywood Midland Sailing ClubMoseley Lawn Tennis Club (Index) Moseley Lawn Tennis Club is a private members club on Billesley Lane in the Wake Green area of Moseley. The facilities include 4 hardcore courts and 4 floodlit all-weather courts. Moseley is an accredited mini and raw tennis centre and welcomes members of all abilities. It employs two LTA coaches, stages social tournaments, and fields 16 teams in men's, ladies and mixed leagues; there is a thriving junior section. Links: Wake Green Moseley Lawn Tennis Club Moseley RFC is a professional rugby club based at Billesley Common. It is one of the country's leading rugby union clubs and was placed in the top tier of domestic competition when league rugby was introduced in 1987. However, the club, whose colours are red and black, spiralled into decline after relegation to the second tier in 1991. Financial problems forced the sale of the Reddings in Moseley, the stadium where the club had been based since 1880. By 2001, it was in the third tier and playing on sports pitches at the University of Birmingham. Fortunes revived after the RFU recognised a consortium of supporters as the new owners of Moseley RFC, thereby blocking a bid to relocate the club to Oxford. A new ground on Billesley Common was leased from the council and the club won promotion to the RFU Championship: the second tier of English rugby. Although the ground currently seats just 650, there are plans to extend the capacity to 5,000. In addition to its professional squad, Moseley fields a development XV, colts, women and junior teams. It was formed as Selly Oak Rugby Club in 1966, but was renamed Moseley Oak after it moved to Billesley Common in 2001 where it shares facilities with Moseley RFC. Moseley Oak is the sister club and amateur arm of Mosely RFC. It provides experience for colts moving from junior to adult rugby and fields former professionals who want to continue rugby as a leisure pursuit. It also welcomes anyone who wants to train, play rugby or participate in the club's social activities. The club, which was established in 1906, fields three senior teams on Saturdays and three on Sundays. The first XI plays in division 1 of the Warwickshire League. There is also a mixed team and junior teams for the under 16's, under 15's and under 13's. The club fields three teams on Saturday and three on Sunday. The first XI plays in the Second Division of the Birmingham & District Premier Cricket League. The club also fields junior teams for the under 17's, under 16's, under 15's, under 14's, under 13's, under 12's and under 11's and a colts team for the under 10's. Links: Sutton Coldfield Town Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club Website Sutton Coldfield Hockey Club (Index) Sutton Coldfield Hockey Club is based at Rectory Park in Sutton Coldfield Town. The ladies section was established in 1890 and the men's section in 1891. They were run as two separate clubs until the 1980's when their respective teams started to share the same clubhouse and facilities. There are currently 10 men's teams, 6 ladies teams, a junior section with under 11, under 13, under 15 and under 18 male and female teams, strollers, louts, rejects and mixed veteran teams for the over 35's and over 45's. Although the clubhouse, which is shared with the cricket club, is located at Rectory Park, the teams play and train at several other venues including the Wyndley Leisure Centre and Bishop Vesey School in Sutton Coldfield, Heartlands School in Nechells, and the Moor Lane Pavillion at Birmingham City University in Perry Barr. The first team currently plays in Southern Football League Division One Midlands: the 8th tier of English domestic football. The club also operates youth and under-16 teams. Links: Sutton Coldfield Town Sutton Coldfield Town FC Website Sutton Sailing Club is based at Powells Pool next to the Boldmere Gate on the southern fringe of Sutton Park; it provides an opportunity to sail competitively or simply to "potter around" on the pool which is a former millpond with a surface area of 48 acres. Races are generally held on Sunday mornings in the winter and on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings at other times of the year. The club keeps a number of boats for hire and provides dinghy, powerboat, safety boat and first aid instruction. There is a dedicated junior section. This ground also stages youth county fixtures, international warm-up fixtures and some Warwickshire second XI matches. The club fields four teams on Saturday and three on Sunday. The first XI plays in Division One of the Birmingham and District Premier League. The club also has a ladies section and youth teams for all ages from under 9's to under 17's. The social committee organises a regular programme of events including race nights, quiz nights and barbecues. Links: Walmley Walmley Cricket Club Website Warwickshire County Cricket Club (Index) Warwickshire County Cricket Club is a professional cricket club that was established at the Regent Hotel in Leamington Spa in 1882. The club moved to Edgbaston Cricket Ground in the Calthorpe area of Edgbaston in 1886 and became a first class county cricket club in 1894. The club plays in Division 1 of the County Championship, the top tier of English cricket, and competes as the Warwickshire Bears in the ECB40 League and Twenty20 cup. County Championship matches are regarded as the traditional version of cricket. Each side generally bats for two innings; each innings lasts until the batsmen are either bowled out or their captains declare; there is an overall time limit of 4 days. The Twenty20 and ECB40 competitions are far shorter versions of the game. In Twenty20 matches, each side bats for 20 overs (120 balls) and the game is generally over within three hours; in ECB40 matches, each side bats for 40 overs (240 balls) and the game usually lasts for around 7 hours. Championship matches are poorly attended whereas Twenty20 and ECB 40 matches can attract huge crowds, particularly when Warwickshire play local rivals Worcestershire. The club, which was formed in 1929, fields 3 Saturday teams and 2 Sunday teams. The first X1 plays in the 3rd division of the Warwickshire Cricket League. There is a regular programme of social events. Links: Weoley Weoley Hill Cricket Club Yardley & District RFC (Index) Yardley & District RFC is a rugby club based on Colehall Lane in Stechford. It fields three senior men's teams, a ladies team, junior boys teams for all ages from under seven to under eighteen and junior girls teams for players aged under 14 and under 17. The pitches are equipped with county standard match floodlights. Other facilities include a licensed bar, clubhouse and gym. Training is provided by qualified coaches. Links: Stechford Yardley & District RFC Yardley Tennis Club is located on Queens Road in Yardley; it is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the world having been established in 1884. The facilities include four hard courts and a Victorian pavilion. It was reported in March 2010 that membership had dwindled to ten and that the pavilion had been vandalised and the courts were partially covered in weeds. However, the LTA might be prepared to fund necessary repairs if 25% of local primary school children were introduced to tennis through the club (News Archive 02/03/10).
