Edgbaston Shopping Centre is on Harborne Road, Five Ways, Edgbaston.
It was originally a 1960's retail mall beneath a high-rise office block.
The owner, Calthorpe Estates, demolished the office block and cleared
the site in 2008.
It planned a new mixed-use development, to be known as the Edgbaston
Galleries, consisting of 3 towers with apartments, hotel, leisure and
retail units and 800 parking spaces.
These plans were revised because of the recession and the site will
now be redeveloped as a two-storey Morrison's superstore, 5 additional
retail units, offices and a car park.
The first planning application submitted by Morrison's in August 2010
was rejected because the design was considered unsuitable for a key
gateway site
(News Headlines 03/08/11).
Revised plans were approved in December 2010
(News Archive 23/12/10).
Work began in September 2011 and should be completed by Autumn 2012.
The new development will create over 300 full and part-time jobs. |
