Whoelsale Markets: Overview
The Birmingham Wholesale Markets are located on a 21-acre site in Digbeth.

The main entrance is on Pershore Street.

The site contains a horticultural market, meat market and fish & poultry market.

Produce is sourced from 31 different countries with an average of 1400 deliveries per week; the peak delivery time is 1am Thursday morning.

Horticultural Market
The horticulture market is the largest of the three wholesale markets.

It is a vast Y-shaped single-storey building with an internal roadway, about 15 metres wide.

This roadway is lined by stalls with an average depth of 28 metres; each has its own loading area and a frontage of either 5.5 or 7.2 metres; a central section has been specially adapted for smaller business units.

Meat Market
The meat market consists of 34 ground-floor units in two rows divided by a chilled buyer's walk and trucking corridor; an upper storey contains office and storage facilities.
Fish & Poultry Market
The fish & poultry market consists of 36 ground-floor units in two rows divided by an air-conditioned buyer's walk and trucking corridor; an upper storey contains offices and storage facilities.
Ancillary Accommodation
The market also contains 30 self-contained warehouses in two large single-storey buildings. Individual units range from 1,200 to 2,500 square metres.
Future of Wholesale Market
The current site of the wholesale market has been earmarked for redevelopment as a retail and entertainment zone in 2013.

There were plans to move the wholesale markets to the former site of IMI in Witton.

However, negotiations for the planned £80 million move have stalled and the council has withdrawn funding (News Headlines 01/08/11).

The markets might close if an alternative location is not found before the current site is redeveloped.

Private Vehicle Access
Private vehicle access requires a pass from the control centre at the main entrance on Pershore Street (0121 3030 0250).

The nearest public parking is at the council multi-storeys on Moat Lane and Pershore Street.
