Shopping Malls in Central Birmingham (Top) The following retail malls are located in central Birmingham: |

The Bullring was rebuilt in 2003 and is now the busiest shopping centre in the United Kingdom with an estimated annual footfall of 37 million. The old Bullring was divided from the rest of the Retail Quarter by the Inner Ring Road which has been replaced by Rotunda Square, a pedestrian plaza at the junction of High Street and New Street, so that pedestrians can reach the new Bull Ring without having to walk through concrete underpasses. The East Mall and West Mall are on the Birmingham Ridge: a steep escarpment 15 metres above Digbeth High Street. There is a futuristic Selfridges store at the far end of the East Mall and a flagship Debenhams at the far end of West Mall. The malls are built into the Birmingham Ridge so that the ground floor units on top of the ridge are at the same level as third-floor units at the bottom of the ridge; the malls are divided by a central boulevard on top of the ridge but joined at Lower Level beneath the ridge. The central boulevard, which divides the malls on the ridge, terminates at the Nelson Memorial from where shoppers can descend to Saint Martins Square via a series of terraces. Shoppers arriving from Edgbaston Street or Digbeth High Street can enter the malls at Lower Level in St Martins Square or climb the terraces to the Upper Level. The market, which serves over 4000 businesses in the West Midlands, could soon be moved to the HUB in Witton, the former location of IMI, which is barely one miles from Spaghetti Junction on the M6. Suburban Shopping Centres in Birmingham (Top) The following suburban shopping centres are located in Birmingham: |
The shops at Acocks Green are centred in the streets around the traffic island at the junction of Warwick Road (A41), Westley Road (B4146) and Shirley Road. This island looks like a traditional village green, but it is in fact a grassed-over tram terminus which is now a busy crossroads and congestion bottleneck. Most of the shops are located on the Warwick Road, which forms part of the A41, a major arterial route between Solihull and central Birmingham. Several major chain stores are represented including Argos, Bon Marche, Dorothy Perkins, Iceland, Sainsbury, Shoe Zone, Wilkinson's, Prontaprint and Pizza Hut. There are also a large number of independent stores and an increasing number of boarded-up premises, charity shops, takeaways, moneylenders and pawnbrokers. Overall, the area has a scruffy appearance, partially caused by the constant traffic, noise and clutter; parking can be difficult. In recent years, Acocks Green has lost significant footfall to other more attractive and accessible shopping centres, particularly at nearby Shirley and Solihull. Its problems could be addressed by a relief road bypassing the Green which would enable the creation of a pedestrian zone with fountains, greenery and street furniture. |

Erdington Town shopping centre is by the Six Ways Roundabout at the intersection of Summer Road (B4142), Sutton New Road (A5127) and the Outer Circle (A4040). It was once the major retail centre in north-east Birmingham but has declined in recent years, mainly due to competition from the new Fort Retail Park in nearby Tyburn. Several key national retailers are still located at the north end of the pedestrianised High Street but the opposite south end mainly contains small independent retailers and charity shops. There is a precinct, Central Square, halfway down the High Street; a mini-mall, the Swannies, on Sutton New Road, and two market halls: Erdington Market on Barnabas Road and Wilton Market with entrances on Sutton New Road and the High Street. Numerous bus routes converge on the Six Ways Roundabout but Erdington Railway Station on the Cross City Line is almost half a mile from the High Street. Parking can be problematical with several small and scattered car parks; for example 40 spaces on Machin Road, 63 spaces on Church Road, and 166 spaces on Hart Road. In order to reverse declining footfall, Erdington is attempting to rebrand itself as an urban village with a diverse range of small independent shops, street cafes, pubs and restaurants. Proposals have been made for the rationalisation of the parking scheme, the broadening of access roads, the extension of the pedestrian area, the provision of street furniture and the installation of public sculptures. Some of these measures have already been implemented. |

Five Ways Shopping Centre (Top) Five Ways Shopping Centre stands at the junction of Islington Row and Broad Street on the Five Ways traffic island in central Birmingham.
The shopping centre, which
was built in the 1960's, forms part of a larger complex that includes a
ten-storey office block known as Auchinleck House, a pedestrian plaza
called Auchinleck Square and a multi-storey car park. The new development will include 300 apartments, a basement car park, retail units, offices and a hotel. The old shopping centre will be reclad and the pedestrian plaza will be covered by a glazed roof. Auchinleck House will be retained and a second 28-storey tower, called the Pentavia, will be constructed next to the refurbished shopping centre. |
The Golden Triangle is centred on Great Hampton Street, Vyse Street and Warstone Lane in the Jewellery Quarter.
This area contains a large
number of independent jewellers, antique dealers, horologists and retail
workshops; prices are generally competitive and many jewellers also make
bespoke items, restore antique jewellery and sell bullion and gems. |
Kings Heath has traditionally been the main retail centre in south Birmingham but in recent years it has lost footfall to the Maypole Retail Park, Shirley and Solihull. Kings Heath High Street is on the A435: a major arterial route that links central Birmingham to its outer suburbs, Worcestershire and Junction 3 of the M42. Consequently the High Street is a congestion bottleneck whilst parking is piecemeal; for example 25 spaces on the High Street, 90 at Scots Corner, etc. Indeed, the failure to rationalise parking by building a single multi-storey with several hundred spaces has significantly contributed to lower footfall. Notwithstanding these problems, several key national retailers are still located on the High Street including Argos, Boots, Dorothy Perkins, Evans and WH Smith. However, there are an increasing number of charity shops, pawnbrokers, boarded-up premises and takeaways. Indeed, there appears to be an overall lack of public investment, and an acceptance that Kings Heath should be dormitory suburb, whose residents should shop and work in the city centre. Several proposals have been submitted for the improvement of the High Street; these include re-opening the Camp Hill Railway Line so that passenger services can operate from New Street to Kings Heath. Kings Heath could then be transformed into an attractive urban village with shrubs, greenery, hanging baskets, street furniture, sculptures, fountains, continental cafes, bistros, pubs, restaurants and speciality retailers; parking should also be rationalised. |
Northfield Shopping Centre (Top) Northfield Town is centred on the intersection of Bristol Road South and the Outer Circle (A4040) which was once a notorious bottleneck on the A38 but has now been bypassed by the Ulwine Drive. Northfield has a large retail mall, the Grosvenor, which contains several key national retailers including Dorothy Perkins, Rymans, Wilkinson's and WH Smith. The mall used to contain a Sainsbury's supermarket, but this has relocated roughly 300 metres to the south, where Ulwine Drive rejoins the Bristol Road at its junction with Frankley Beeches Road. There is a 290-space car park on Ulwine Drive, but otherwise parking is still piecemeal: for example 22 spaces on Lockwood Road, 30 spaces on Church Road etc. |
Sutton Coldfield Shopping Centre (Top) The Sutton Coldfield Shopping Centre is enclosed by a ring road with a diameter of barely 300 metres. There are several car parks located in and around the ring road; these include 508 spaces on Victoria Road, 46 on Reddicroft Lower, 74 on Reddicroft Upper, 132 on South Parade and 50 on Duke Street. The ring road creates an obstacle between the shopping centre and the old town; there are proposals to integrate these areas by building a new bypass and introducing pedestrian zones linking Holy Trinity Church, Vesey Gardens and the Town Hall to the shopping centre. The area within the ring road is largely pedestrianised; it contains a bus interchange and three retail malls; two of these malls - the Red Rose on Lower Parade and Inshops on South Parade - contain independent speciality retailers. The largest concentration of stores is at the Mall, formerly the Gracechurch Centre, on the Parade. The Mall was built in 1974 and refurbished in 2006; it contains the following stores: 3G, Ann Summers, Argos, Art at Home, Azuri, Bank, Barratts, Beaverbrooks, BHS, Bodyshop, Bodycare, Bonmarche, Boots, Card Factory, Carphone Warehouse, Claires, Clarks; and Clinton Cards, Co-op Travel, Dolland and Atchison, Equilibrium, Ernest Jones, Evans, Game Station, Going Places, Goldsmiths, H Samuel, H&M; and Hanson's Linens, Holland & Barrett, House of Fraser, I.D., Internacionale, Jane Norman, JD Sports, Jessops, Julian Graves, La Senza, Laura Ashley; and Marks & Spencer, Monsoon/Accessorize, Oriental Shop, Pandora, Phones4U, Red London, Remainder Books, Republic, River Island, Rymans; and Sony Centre, Syer Hair and Beauty, The Works, Theo Giorgio, Thomson, Thorntons, Timsons, T-Mobile, Vision Express, Vixen Couture, Wallis, WH Smith The Mall contains the following cafes and eateries: Costa Coffee, Druckers, Greggs, O'Neill, Starbucks, Ted's Hot Potatoes, Temple Bar, The Mall also contains a Post Office and branches of the Natwest Bank and West Bromwich Building Society. 0121 355 1112 210a Parade B72 1PA
