Overview
 
Stechford Avoiding Line runs for 2.6 miles between Stechford Junction on the West Coast Mainline and Aston Junction South on the Cross City Line.

It enables freight trains travelling between Coventry and the Black Country to avoid Proof House Junction, Curzon Street Junction and New Street Station.

Stechford Junction (Top)
 
Freight trains travelling from Coventry on the West Coast Mainline may switch to the Stechford Avoiding Line at Stechford Junction in order to avoid central Birmingham.
 
Cottsmeadow Tower Blocks (Top)
 
From Stechford Junction, the line bridges the River Cole and heads west past the Cottsmeadow tower blocks, St Cuthberts Catholic Primary School, Cotterills Lane Recreation Ground and the Burney Lane Allotments.

It then continues on an embankment above Cotterills Lane and past the long narrow gardens of terraced houses on Bankdale Road and Pelham Road.

 
Sladefield Road (Top)
 
From Pelham Road, the route runs in a cutting beneath Alum Rock Road and then travels past the Pelham Mosque, through a belt of semi-detached houses and beneath Sladefield Road.
 
Ward End Park (Top)
 
Heading north-west from Sladefield Road, the line runs through Ward End Park on a tree-lined embankment and then travels above Ward End Road and past the PAK superstore and Lime Tree Road Allotments.
 
Aston Gas Holders (Top)
 
From the Lime Tree Road Allotments, the route continues beneath Highfield Road, Washwood Heath Road and Warren Road, past the spire of St Margaret's Church and rows of Edwardian terraces, before bridging the Birmingham-Peterborough Line by the Aston Gas Holders.
 
Nechells Baths (Top)
 
Heading north-west from the Aston Gas Holders, the line crosses above Nechells Parkway and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal before continuing in a cutting beneath Mount Street and past the Edwardian bathhouse on Nechells Park Road.
 
Aston Junction South (Top)
 
From Nechells Park Road, the line travels through inner city Nechells beneath Cook Street, Long Acre and Holborn Hill before reaching Aston Junction South.

Aston Junction South connects the Stechford Avoiding Line to the Cross City Line. Trains leaving the Stechford Avoiding Line at Aston Junction South must continue through Aston Station to Aston Junction North.

 
Aston Junction North (Top)
 
Aston Junction North connects the Cross City Line to the Birmingham-Walsall Line. Freight trains may continue north on the Cross City Line towards Sutton Coldfield or switch to the Birmingham-Walsall Line in order to reach the Black Country.
