The Midland Metro is a 12.5 mile tramway that connects
Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton St Georges. There are 6 Birmingham stations spaced at intervals of
roughly half a mile. The rolling stock consists of sixteen T69
articulated two-section trams. Each tram has 3 entrances and 56
seats. Bicycles are not permitted.
Services run at 6 - 8 minute intervals during weekdays, but
are less frequent in the evening and on Sunday. The typical
journey time from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton is 35
minutes. The Midland Metro is more expensive than the bus
service and so is less popular than anticipated. The current annual
passenger footfall appears to have peaked at 5 million, barely
one-third of that predicted at the planning stage. |

The Midland Metro was going to be extended 3 kilometres from
Snow Hill Station to Five Ways but only a 1 kilometre extension
from Snow Hill to New Street Station was finally approved. The
extension will cost £127 million including £9 million already
spent on the construction of a viaduct at Snow Hill Station
(News Archive 17/03/10). Funding was confirmed in October
2010
(News Archive 21/10/10).
In November 2010, a bridge was installed above Great Charles
Street Queensway as part of the planned extension
(News Archive 30/11/10).
The route of the Midland Metro (red) through Birmingham and
the route of the planned extension (purple) are shown on the map
