Railway Lines in Handsworth

Three railway lines run through Handsworth: (1) the Leamington-Worcester Line; (2) the Midland Metro; and (3) the Handsworth Linking Line.

The Leamington-Worcester Line and the Midland Metro run side-by side on an east-west axis; they are bridged by the Handsworth Linking Line which runs on a north-south axis; there is no junction.

Leamington-Worcester Line

The Leamington-Worcester Line and Midland Metro run side-by-side through Handsworth on an east-west axis.

Heading west from Bacchus Road in Soho, they run in a cutting beneath the Handsworth Linking Line and then ride an embankment above Handsworth New Road, Queens Head Road and Booth Street.

There is a metro station on Booth Street, next to the former site of Handsworth and Smethwick Railway Station which closed in 1972.

From Booth Street, the lines continue on an embankment above Wattville Road towards the Hawthorns in West Bromwich.

Handsworth Linking Line

The Handsworth Linking Line runs through Handsworth on a north-south axis.

It connects Soho Junction on the West Coast Mainline to Perry Barr Junction on the Birmingham-Walsall Line.

Heading northwards from Soho Junction, the line runs on an embankment above Perrott Street and Handsworth New Road and then bridges the Midland Metro and Leamington-Worcester Lines.

It then continues on an embankment above Park Road before entering a cutting beneath Soho Road at the former site of Soho Station which closed in 1941.

Heading northwards from Soho Road, it runs in a cutting through Handsworth Park before entering a tunnel beneath Hamstead Road en route to Perry Barr Junction.
