Sutton Coldfield Constituency
 
The Sutton Coldfield constituency contains the Sutton Trinity, Sutton Vesey, Sutton New Hall and Sutton Four Oaks wards. It is one of the safest Conservative seats in the UK.

Sutton Coldfield was represented by Sir Norman Fowler from 1974 until 2001; the current MP is Andrew Mitchell.

Andrew Mitchell MP
 

Andrew Mitchell (b 1956) has held Sutton Coldfield for the Conservatives since 2001.

A former pupil of Rugby School, he served in the Royal Tank regiment and studied history at Jesus College Cambridge where he was President of the Cambridge Union.

He has worked for the investment bank Lazards and the management consultancy Touche Ross; he was also an auditor for Storehouse PLC and the Finance Director of WH Everett.

He first entered parliament in 1987 as MP for Gedling in Nottinghamshire but lost his seat in the Labour landslide of 1997; he returned to parliament as MP for Sutton Coldfield in 2001

Andrew Mitchell has served as parliamentary private secretary to the Secretary of State for Energy and to the Minister of State at the Foreign Office; he was Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party and an assistant whip under John Major.

In Opposition he was a Shadow Minister of State, initially for Economic Affairs and then for Home Affairs and Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.

He is currently the Secretary of State for International Development.

Andrew Mitchell is married with two children. His father David Mitchell was also a Conservative MP who served as a minister under Margaret Thatcher.

May 2010 Election Result
 

The result of the May 2010 poll was:

Andrew Mitchell (Conservative) 27,303, Robert Pocock (Labour) 10,298, Richard Brighton (Liberal Democrat) 9,117, Robert Grierson (British National Party) 1,749, Edward Siddall-Jones (UK Independence Party) 1,587, Joe Rooney (Green) 535.

Andrew Mitchell held the seat with a majority of 17,005 on a turnout of 67.9%. There was a 3.4% swing from Labour to Conservative.

Sutton Coldfield is also a council constituency with a district committee that is attended by the 12 councillors who represent the 4 wards that make up the constituency.

Birmingham City Council delegates some local powers to this committee.
